Source Foundry is a foundry, at least in ambition. That is almost everything we know. The reported $400 million comes from Situational Awareness, the fund created by Leopold Aschenbrenner, the former OpenAI researcher whose essay on situational awareness helped define the current AI-risk debate. No engineering specifications have been released. On its face, $400 million cannot build a leading-edge fab. TSMC routinely spends more than $20 billion on a single advanced process line. Even a mature-node mini-fab with second-hand DUV equipment will burn through most of that in cleanroom construction, tooling, materials, and the first year of wages. In crypto terms, this is not a Series A. It is a pre-seed for hardware that will take years to produce revenue.
