Binance, OKX and Bitget Control Over 80% of Equity Perpetual Futures as Quarterly Volume Tops $1.61 Trillion

TokenInsight's market-share snapshot puts equity perpetuals at roughly three times the size of commodity perpetuals, but the report leaves pricing mechanics, compliance exposure and data integrity unaddressed.

Centralized exchanges traded approximately $1.61 trillion in equity perpetual contracts during the third quarter of 2026, according to a market-share report attributed to research firm TokenInsight, with three venues absorbing more than four-fifths of the total. Binance, OKX and Bitget together accounted for roughly 81.9% of volume, extending an oligopoly that mirrors the broader structure of crypto derivatives but appears even more concentrated.

Binance recorded about $943 billion in quarterly volume, or 58.60% of the market. OKX followed with approximately $254 billion and a 15.79% share, while Bitget booked roughly $122 billion for 7.60%. The remaining $291 billion, about 18% of the total, was split among venues the report did not name, a long tail expected to include Bybit, Gate and MEXC.

The arithmetic is internally consistent. The three disclosed figures sum to $1.319 trillion, which is 81.9% of $1.61 trillion, matching the report's claim that the top three exceed 80%. What the numbers do not establish is how the totals were calculated, which contracts were included, or whether the volumes reflect economic activity rather than incentive-driven turnover.

What an equity perpetual actually is

Equity perpetual contracts are synthetic derivatives that track the price of a US-listed stock — Tesla, NVIDIA and Strategy (formerly MicroStrategy) are the commonly cited examples — settle in stablecoins such as USDT or USDC, and never expire. They are best understood not as a blockchain breakthrough but as a product-format innovation: the traditional contract-for-difference wrapper rebuilt for a 24/7 crypto venue, with funding rates replacing the expiry mechanism that anchors conventional futures to spot.

That framing matters for how the numbers should be read. The category is young, having emerged in meaningful size only in 2024 and 2025. Nothing in the report describes latency, slippage, order-book depth, index construction or risk parameters, so the operational quality of the three products cannot be compared.

The 24/7 problem

The core technical risk in this category sits in the pricing and liquidation engine, not on any chain. An equity perpetual tracks an instrument that does not trade around the clock: US equities have opening and closing bells, overnight gaps and weekend closures. A perpetual trades continuously. How the index behaves while the underlying is closed — and how a Monday opening gap is handled — determines whether liquidations are fair or arbitrary. Where the reference price is produced by an exchange-built index or a third-party feed, quiet hours are precisely when thin pricing can trigger forced closures at prices no open market would have produced.

The trust model is correspondingly centralized. Index calculation, margin rules, liquidation thresholds and funding rates are all set unilaterally by the venue, with no on-chain verifiability and no public peer review of the risk engine. That is a structural feature of the product, not a criticism of any single exchange, but it should discount claims of technical sophistication.

Data integrity

Exchange derivatives volume is a famously soft number. Market-maker rebates, trading competitions and points programs routinely inflate reported turnover, and the gap between disclosed and economic volume across large venues is commonly estimated at 20% to 50%. The TokenInsight figures are more reliable as a ranking than as a measure of absolute scale.

A second, sharper problem is dating. The report is presented as covering the third quarter of 2026 yet circulated in the format of a news flash announcing a published study. If the document is historical, the current date should already be past the period it covers; if it is forward-looking, it should not be described as a released report carrying precise turnover figures. Until the original document and its publication date are verified, every number above should be treated as provisional. One check that would help: open interest. If aggregate open interest across the three venues sits far below quarterly volume, the turnover figures are more likely to be churn than capital.

The regulatory gap

The most consequential omission is compliance. Synthetic exposure to US equity prices sold to retail users is, in most major jurisdictions, a regulated or restricted activity. Under a Howey-style analysis the underlying — a listed share — is plainly a security, and a contract offering price exposure to it is likely to be treated as a security-based swap, a contract for difference or a derivative, depending on the jurisdiction. The EU caps leverage and restricts marketing of CFDs to retail clients under MiFID II; several Asian jurisdictions prohibit retail equity derivatives outright. The report contains no section on licensing, entity structure, user geography or KYC treatment for this specific product line.

The working assumption should be offshore incorporation, geo-blocking and broad terms-of-service disclaimers rather than licensed operation in the US or EU. That is a familiar pattern in crypto, and it carries a familiar asymmetry: the larger the category grows, the stronger the enforcement incentive becomes. A $1.61 trillion quarterly market is not a niche that regulators will ignore. The paradox is that success invites the scrutiny that could contract it.

The "third place" question

Bitget's ranking will be marketed as a first-tier position, and the framing deserves scrutiny. At 7.60%, Bitget holds roughly one-eighth of Binance's share and less than half of OKX's. It leads the second tier; it does not stand alongside the two leaders. Presenting the result as a three-way split misstates the distribution, which is one dominant venue, one strong second and a challenger with a visible gap above it.

Share at this level is also less sticky than it looks. Depth in equity perpetuals depends heavily on market-maker inventory, and market-maker inventory follows incentive budgets. Differences in quoted share can reflect differences in rebate spending as much as differences in product quality. A budget change can move several percentage points of share within a quarter or two. Monthly tracking, not a single quarterly snapshot, is the right instrument.

The structural signal

Set the caveats aside and one signal survives. Equity perpetual volume is reported at more than three times that of commodity perpetuals. If accurate, that ratio describes a migration of capital and attention from crypto-native underlyings toward tokenized traditional assets — a structural shift rather than a short-lived rotation, and a demand-side validation for the real-world-asset thesis that has spent years searching for evidence of actual usage.

The transmission runs in several directions. Traditional brokers and CFD providers face diversion of retail speculative flow. On-chain perpetual DEXs face substitution pressure, since centralized venues integrate US equity data and source liquidity more easily, though they retain an edge in verifiability over the long run. Oracle and data providers see incremental feed demand. Stablecoin issuers benefit indirectly, since settlement requires a stablecoin leg. And regulators gain a larger target.

The strategic reading is that whoever owns this interface owns the distribution channel through which traditional assets enter crypto liquidity. That is a valuable position. It is also an interface with weak lock-in: the upstream data source is outside any exchange's control, and downstream users can switch venues in minutes. The moat is liquidity and brand, not technology or network effects.

What to watch

Four signals matter more than the headline ranking. First, the authenticity of the report date — locate the original TokenInsight document and confirm the coverage period. Second, enforcement activity from the SEC, CFTC or EU authorities directed at tokenized equity derivatives, which would reprice the entire category. Third, month-over-month share movement, where a swing of two percentage points in either direction would confirm or refute the concentration story. Fourth, open interest relative to volume, the cleanest available proxy for how much of the reported turnover is real. The original document, not this summary, should be the basis for any decision.

Until at least the first and fourth are resolved, the correct use of this data is relative ordering — who leads, who follows, by how much — and not an assertion about market size, product quality or the value of any associated exchange token. Trading volume share says nothing about buyback ratios, burn mechanics or revenue linkage, and no token valuation conclusion can be drawn from it.

For now the snapshot says what a snapshot can say: Binance dominates, OKX holds a solid second, Bitget leads the rest, and the category is growing fast enough to matter. Everything beyond that is inference wearing the clothes of data.
