22,000 Tokens, One Quarter In Profit: The Supply Glut Nobody Wants to Price

CryptoLion โ€ข โ€ข NFT

Late September. Two numbers crossed my screen within the same hour, and together they say more about this cycle than any ETF headline or Fed whisper.

CoinGecko now tracks more than 22,000 tokens. Glassnode reports that the median altcoin has less than 25% of its supply in profit.

Read the second number slowly. Not the average. Not the market-cap-weighted composite. The median. That means half of every token in existence is in worse shape than a figure that already describes a market where three out of four holders are underwater. The typical altcoin is a losing position. And there are 22,000 of them competing for a shrinking pool of buyers.

That is not a market correction. That is a structural condition. And most people staring at green candles on BTC are refusing to see it.

What "Supply in Profit" Actually Measures

Let me translate the metric before anyone weaponizes it. Supply in Profit, as Glassnode maintains it, tracks the share of a token's supply whose current price sits above the price at which it last moved on-chain. In plain terms: how much of the float is sitting on a gain versus a loss. It is derived from cost basis โ€” the last-moved price of each coin โ€” not from any exchange's internal ledger. That distinction matters. On-chain cost basis is an approximation. It misses off-chain custodial shuffling and it lags. But as a market-breadth instrument, it does something price charts cannot: it tells you how the crowd feels, aggregated across thousands of assets at once.

I have been building these breadth datasets since 2017, when I wrote a Python script to scrape Ethereum gas fees and token distribution patterns across fifty-plus ICOs. Four hundred hours of that work taught me one durable lesson: the headline price of a market and the health of its participants are two different variables. In late 2017 the two diverged by months. They are diverging again now.

The brief that carried these numbers was a bare data drop โ€” no project, no protocol, no token issuance. Just two figures. That sparseness is itself the story. When the most quotable fact in crypto is "there are too many tokens and almost nobody is winning," you are not looking at a news cycle. You are looking at a market structure.

The Supply Side: 22,000 Ways to Dilute a Bull Market

Here is the arithmetic nobody puts on a slide. Twenty-two thousand tokens. Every one of them wants the same marginal dollar. In a cycle where total liquidity is finite โ€” and it is always finite, no matter what the permabulls tell you โ€” the buy pressure that used to lift an entire sector now gets sliced 22,000 ways.

The altcoin "season" everyone keeps waiting for is not delayed. It has been structurally diluted out of existence.

Think about what powered the 2017 run. A few hundred credible tokens, a wave of retail capital, and a narrative that anything on-chain was scarce. Scarcity was the whole trade. Now run the same capital through 22,000 assets and the per-token bid collapses. The money did not disappear. It got spread so thin it stopped moving anything.

And notice where the supply growth comes from. Airdrops. Points programs. Low-float, high-FDV launches that dump on retail the moment they list. Every one of these mechanisms adds supply without adding demand. They are, functionally, a tax on everyone already holding. The token inflation is not an accident of the cycle โ€” it is the cycle's business model.

Liquidity doesn't lie. And right now it is telling you that supply is outrunning demand by an order of magnitude.

The Demand Side: A Quarter in Profit, and Falling

Now the other half of the ledger. Less than 25% of the median token's supply is in profit. For the average holder, the cost basis sits above the current price. That is what "underwater" looks like at scale.

This creates a specific and underappreciated mechanical problem: overhead resistance that has nothing to do with chart patterns. Every token that rallies back toward its holders' cost basis meets a wall of people trying to get even. The supply that bought higher is waiting to sell at breakeven. The market has to absorb that before it can move up cleanly. That is why so many "recoveries" stall at a level that looks arbitrary on a price chart but is perfectly rational on a cost-basis chart.

22,000 Tokens, One Quarter In Profit: The Supply Glut Nobody Wants to Price

I watched this dynamic play out in 2022, in the weeks after Terra. I published a twenty-page macro thesis arguing that the collapse was a liquidity crisis wearing a technology costume โ€” that the real contagion risk sat in the balance sheets of Celsius and Three Arrows, not in the algorithmic stablecoin's code. The people who read it early understood that cost basis, not code, would decide who survived. The same lens applies here, just applied across the whole long tail instead of one protocol.

The brief that carried these numbers frames them as neutral. They are not neutral. A median profit ratio under 25% is a description of a market in capitulation โ€” and capitulation is a process, not a single day.

Why This Is Not Your Grandfather's Bottom Signal

Here is where I part ways with the hopium crowd, and where the honest version of this analysis gets uncomfortable.

The reflexive read goes like this: extreme low profit-supply ratios historically marked bottoms โ€” late 2018, March 2020, late 2022 โ€” therefore buy. I have seen this argument circulate within hours of the data dropping. It is not wrong on the history. It is dangerously incomplete on the mechanism.

Those earlier bottoms shared a property this one does not. Supply was not structurally exploding. In 2018 the token universe was small enough that a genuine wave of new capital could lift the median. Today the median is not liftable by any realistic inflow, because 22,000 assets absorb it before it reaches the middle of the distribution. The indicator can stay pinned at extremes for far longer than a leveraged bottom-fisher can stay solvent. Low profit-supply is a necessary condition for a bottom. It is nowhere near sufficient.

Another rug? No, just a liquidity trap. The trap here is mistaking a structural repricing for a cyclical dip. One resolves upward on its own. The other requires the supply glut to clear first โ€” and nothing on-chain suggests that clearing has even started.

The Concentration Nobody Advertises

Underneath the breadth data sits a distribution most people intuit but rarely quantify. Twenty-two thousand tokens do not share liquidity evenly. They follow a power law. A hundred names โ€” and realistically fewer โ€” hold the overwhelming share of market cap and trading volume. The rest are near-zombie assets: tokenized ghosts with a contract address, a Telegram channel, and no functioning user base.

This is why BTC dominance keeps grinding up while altcoin indices bleed. Capital is not fleeing crypto. It is fleeing the long tail and consolidating into the two or three assets it trusts to survive the cycle. That is not capitulation in the classic sense โ€” it is a flight to quality, and it is entirely rational given the supply math.

The DeFi dimension makes it worse. Altcoins are collateral. When collateral loses 75% of its holders' basis, the lending markets that accepted it start to look fragile. I spent three months in 2020 reverse-engineering liquidity pool rebalancing mechanics for a fifteen-page report on stablecoin arbitrage, and the lesson from that work is that collateral cascades do not announce themselves. They build quietly in the loan-to-value ratios until one forced liquidation trips the next. A long tail of depressed collateral is exactly the kind of dry tinder that turns a bad week into a liquidation cascade.

The Contrarian Angle: Decoupling Is Real, But Not the Way You Think

The bull case right now is "decoupling" โ€” the idea that crypto has finally broken free of macro and will run on its own institutional logic. I buy half of that thesis and reject the other half.

What is decoupling is BTC and, to a lesser extent, ETH. ETF flows, custody rails, and a genuine institutional bid have attached the top of the market to TradFi in a way that is new. When BlackRock's allocation desk rebalances, that is a different flow than a retail degen rotating into a meme coin. The head of the market is becoming a macro asset.

What is not decoupling is the tail. The 22,000 tokens are not macro assets. They are, functionally, venture-stage equity with no revenue, no moat, and a printing press for dilution. They trade on sentiment and liquidity, and both are draining toward the top. The "crypto market" is not one market. It is a barbell: a maturing macro asset on one end and a decaying speculative bazaar on the other.

The contrarian call, then, is not "altseason is coming." It is that the very concept of a broad altseason may be dead โ€” replaced by episodic, sector-specific rotations that lift a handful of names and leave the median untouched. If you are positioned for a tide that lifts all boats, you are positioned for a tide that no longer exists.

There is a regulatory undertone here too. Under a Howey lens, a large share of the long tail plausibly qualifies as unregistered securities โ€” pooled money, common enterprise, expectation of profit from others' efforts. A profit ratio this low is a quiet argument that most of these assets never had investment merit to begin with, which gives enforcers a ready-made narrative. Liquidity doesn't need a courtroom to bury a token, but a courtroom can speed the burial up.

What I'm Watching, and Why the Data Cuts Both Ways

I do not trade on a single data point, and neither should you. A profit-supply reading this low is a background condition, not a trigger. But it is a genuinely useful background condition if you know how to read it.

The signals that would actually change the picture: the median profit ratio climbing back above 40โ€“50%, which would mark real sentiment reversal rather than a dead-cat bounce. CoinGecko's token count flattening or declining, which would signal the supply glut finally clearing. BTC dominance rolling over, which would hint at capital spilling back down the curve. And stablecoin net inflows turning persistently positive, which is the only reliable proxy for genuinely new money entering the system.

Until several of those align, the honest posture is defensive. Raise your quality bar. Cut your beta to the long tail. Understand that in a supply-glutted market, the asset that survives is the one with real cash flow and real liquidity โ€” not the one with the best narrative.

I said this after Terra and it cost me some friends in the space: liquidity doesn't care about your roadmap. It cares about depth, and depth is concentrating at the top. The AI-crypto convergence work I have been doing this year โ€” building frameworks for decentralized agents to verify on-chain data integrity โ€” points the same direction. The value accrues to infrastructure and verification, to the shovels, not to the 22,000 shovels' worth of dirt.

The Takeaway

Two numbers. Twenty-two thousand tokens. A median profit ratio under a quarter. Together they describe a market that has quietly become two markets โ€” a maturing macro asset at the top and a decaying speculative bazaar beneath it โ€” and the gap between them is widening, not closing.

The question worth sitting with is not whether the bottom is in. It is whether the median altcoin has any path back to profitability that does not depend on new money it will never receive. If the answer is no โ€” and the supply math says it is โ€” then this cycle's real story is not the ETF. It is the slow, on-chain-visible extinction of the long tail.

The data is not pessimistic. It is honest. The market is telling you where the liquidity is going. The only question is whether you are listening.
