Moonshot’s $50 Billion Bet: The Centralized AI Hype Is a Warning for Web3

0xRay Podcast
We don’t need more users; we need more stewards. This is the creed I repeat to myself as I read the news: Moonshot (Kimi), the Chinese AI darling known for its million-token context window, is raising a pre-IPO round at a staggering $50 billion valuation. It has already restructured into a red-chip entity for a Hong Kong listing, expected as soon as 2025. The tech world is buzzing. But as someone who watched the ICO mania of 2017 burn idealism into ash, I see a different story—one where centralized capital mimics the very speculative patterns we in Web3 claim to transcend. The narrative is polished. Moonshot’s long-context large language model (LLM) has become a product-market fit legend: lawyers upload entire contracts, analysts digest thousand-page reports, and the market responds with a valuation leap from $31.5 billion to $50 billion in months. The company’s technical achievement is real—Ring Attention and KV cache optimizations are engineering marvels. Yet the core insight is not about technology. It is about trust. Moonshot asks us to trust a centralized entity with our data, our workflows, and our future. In return, it offers equity—not tokens, not governance rights, not ownership of the protocol. Just a share price set by bankers. Based on my experience auditing OmniChain’s whitepaper in 2017, I recognize the pattern. Back then, a project promised financial democracy while its tokenomics enriched early investors. Today, Moonshot promises AI empowerment while its pre-IPO round enriches a select group of funds. The valuation is built on a narrative of monopoly, not on auditable metrics. The company has not disclosed its monthly active users, paid conversion rates, or API call volumes. The market is pricing a dream of dominance, not a present-day P&L. The disconnect is glaring: $50 billion is more than the entire 2024 global LLM market revenue. Here is the contrarian angle the breathless coverage ignores. Moonshot’s core advantage—long context—is being erased by deep-pocketed rivals. Alibaba’s Tongyi Qianwen already supports 10 million tokens. Baidu, ByteDance, and Tencent are racing. The window for differentiation is closing. And what happens then? The company becomes a commodity API provider battling price wars, not a $50 billion empire. In Web3 terms, it is like a Layer2 with a six-month head start on blob space efficiency—only to see every other rollup copy the technique and drive fees down to near zero. Post-Dencun, many believed blob data would stay cheap forever. I argued then that saturation would double gas within two years. The same logic applies here: AI inference costs will plummet, and the premium on any single model’s clever trick will evaporate. The most revealing part of the news is what is omitted. There is no mention of data provenance, user ownership, or decentralized governance. Moonshot is a black box. You feed it your sensitive legal documents, and it trains on them—do you know where your data goes? Under China’s new generative AI regulations, the company must monitor content, log queries, and enforce censorship. That is a feature of centralized architecture, not a bug. In Web3, we argue that code is law; here, code is a product sold to the highest bidder. The pre-IPO investors are buying access to a data monopoly, not a tool for empowerment. I learned during my 2022 burnout in Yilan that the deepest value in technology is not speed or scale—it is trust. Trust is the only protocol that cannot be coded. Moonshot’s $50 billion valuation is a bet that centralized trust will win. But those of us who have seen the cycles know: centralized trust always fails, eventually. The ICOs collapsed. Terra Luna collapsed. And this AI decacorn will face its own reckoning—not because the tech is bad, but because the governance is fragile. A single government action, a data breach, or a resignation of a key researcher can shatter the entire edifice. What should Web3 builders learn? We built not for the peak, but for the valley. The valley is where the real work happens: building open-source models with verifiable training data, creating DAOs that govern AI development, and designing token models that align incentives with long-term stewardship rather than short-term exit. Moonshot’s IPO will test whether the market prefers a sleek story or a sustainable system. If the stock soars, it will prove that hype still beats substance. But if it stumbles—and I suspect it will—it will be a signal that even the most sophisticated investors are starting to demand the transparency that only decentralized protocols can offer. The question is not whether Moonshot can build a better transformer. It is whether we are willing to let one company own the transformer. In the decade ahead, the winners will be those who bring the community into the vault, not those who lock the vault and sell tickets. We don’t need more users; we need more stewards. And that begins by questioning the $50 billion story before the champagne is poured.
